But recently Firefox has released many version within a short period of time, most of these upgrades were not only bug fixes but speed improvement and Security enhancements. In A earlier post we shown you How to Speed up Firefox Startup, here we will show how to increase response time while loading pages.

Firefox About Config warning

If you still like Firefox and worried about speed of the browser the good news is that you can further tweak the browser for speed. here we will discuss some of the special hidden tweaks, which are not available to other normal users. These tweak will not only increase the speed of Firefox overall but also improve page load time for Firefox latest version.

Firefox has a hidden advanced menu which can be activated by typing about:config in address bar. Once you type this command, it presents you a nice little humorous warning with heading “This might void your warranty”, Click on the button “I’ll be careful, I promise!” and you are in. Now once you click that button you will see thousands of option with default values. Had you ever though that this nice Firefox browser will have so many options ?

Anyway we will change some of the selected option to speed up Firefox further. Here is the list of options which we are going to change.

1. Send Multiple requests to a server

Firefox About Config - Network http Options

This option is defined by value network.http.pipelining, by default it is set to False, once you set it to true, it will start sending multiple simultaneous request to web server while loading the page. It improves page load time for your website. simply double click on it and it will toggle from False to True

2. Increase Number of Request to Server

Second option to look for is network.http.pipelining.maxrequests. This defines number of request to be sent, by default the value is set to 4, you can increase it to 8 or 10 depending upon your Line speed.

3. Disable prefetching of Contents

Look for option network.prefetch-next , this is usually set to True by default. Double click it and toggle it to false. This will now stop loading content of WebPages which you have not visited yet. Prefetching start loading other pages of same site which are not yet visited by you but likely to be visited.

4. Stops image placeholders display

look out for option browser.display.show_image_placeholders and set it to false. This option defines how images are displayed while they are not fully downloaded. In Google chrome you will see that the images or placeholder of image is not displayed until they are fully downloaded. However it loads all text so that you can read through the content if any. This increase page load time and you can read through the page while image is being downloaded in background.

These option should increase your page load time in Firefox by a big margin. You will be able to see a big difference after setting these options and I am sure you will love your favorite browser even more like I do.

If you are a heavy user of internet, you must be using tab feature of Our favorite browser Google chrome. If yes, then you must be opening a lot of tabs, sometime number of tabs increase is so much that managing them become difficult.

Google chrome or any other browser offers very limited space to manage multiple tabs. You can see only a fixed number of tabs without scrolling, once that number is reached, tab list is spanned to next page. With multi page tab list it becomes extremely difficult to switch between 2 tabs, specially if they are listed on different pages or if you using more than one browser window along with many tabs.

TabSense - Easy Tab management for Google Chrome

To overcome such difficult situation you must use Google chrome Extension TabSense. This extension create a view of all open tab in all instance of Chrome in a single browser window. Using this tab you can categorize each window with different name and drag and drop tabs between windows.

It adds a button on your Address bar, once you click on this button, it will open a new tab which will display list of all open tab across multiple instance of Google chrome. Not only that, each tab will also have their favicon and page name displayed in the list so that you can easily recognize the webpage.

This Google chrome extension is Opensource and inspired by Firefox extension Tab Candy. In tab sense it is also possible to close entire Google chrome instance from Tabsense window and it also saves information about all of the tab opened at the time of closing, this makes possible to reopen all of the tabs later. This feature is very useful if you running low of system resources and want to free some by closing some of the active tabs.

At first, I was totally diffident to use Google Chrome as my web browser because I was pleasantly hooked to the plugins of my former internet browser. However, when I heard about the steadily increasing Chrome plugins, I gave it a second thought. With outpouring curiosity, I finally gave in to try it out. It’s a good thing that I did. I was stunned as to the efficiency of plugin Chrome especially the programs that are very useful to increase my work productivity and time-efficiency. Yet, I was also amazed upon learning that I could incorporate productivity and style with these Chrome plugins.

Due to the abundance of free plugin for Chrome available these days, I personally made a list of plugins that I find very useful as far as productivity is concerned. Here they are.

Adblock for Chrome

AdBlock – This plugin is very useful as it blocks ads from the web pages, thus, allowing you to just concentrate on the web content. This add-on is the primary reason for the popularity of Firefox web browser, and transition to Chrome AdBlock plugin is quite easy. After installing the plugin, it automatically works in blocking ads. What makes it even more exciting for me is that it can be customized to restrain from showing annoying ads on your selected web pages. Moreover, when the program has overlooked several ads, they can be added onto the program in order to completely block those ads from coming out.

Flash block – This is another useful plugin for Chrome because it blocks the flash content of web pages. It even allows you to decide which websites you will permit to load flash content by placing them in the white list. I find this plugin very advantageous because I work a lot with my computer, and by using this application, it effectively helps in dropping down memory usage as well as a good AdBlock alternative.

Lazarus for Chrome

Lazarus – Whoever is not annoyed with system crashes or network breakdowns? This is basically time-consuming especially when you are in the middle of filling up forms. A form-recovery application, like Lazarus, will help you out and save all the information when filling up forms and retrieve them with just one click of your mouse, thus saving from starting all over again.

Snippy – This Chrome plugin is also useful in grabbing web page scraps such as links, images, paragraphs and the like, and save them for future reference. It efficiently cuts back the time in searching for these scraps, hence, you can use the extra time in working on other tasks.

Time tracker – This simple Chrome add-on helps in tracking down the time used in browsing multiple web pages and has been very helpful in increasing productivity especially for freelance workers like me. Even offline institutions have taken advantage of this program to evaluate their employees’ browsing activity.

Tab Organizer for Chrome

Tab organizer – This particular Chrome plugin works in organizing your tabs. Aside from that, it also allows you to pick and close several windows and tabs because running multiple applications slows down your PC performance.

RemindMe – I fully take advantage of this add-on as it allows me to set job reminders while browsing the internet and even allows me to synchronize it between multiple machines. This chrome plugin also allows adding the reminders in the Google calendar. It gives no excuses for undone tasks thus making your boss fully satisfied with your work.

The abovementioned chrome plugins are only few of the clusters of plugins offered by Google. Aside from increasing your work productivity, it fully maximizes your web browser making it more accessible.

Welcome RockMelt

If social networking is your prime web activity, you can’t stay away from RockMelt – the first dedicated re-imagined Social Browser. With the growing web activity such as staying connected, consuming news, shopping, etc. around the social webs, there was a vacant place for a dedicated social browser and RockMelt took the opportunity to re-define our new-age web experiences thereby helping us to re-imagine our digital lifestyle effecting around the social webs.

RockMelt Social Browser

Traditional browsers, how effective they may be, lack appreciable integration with the social networking activities. It is true that most of our today’s decisions are highly influenced by our Facebook or other similar social site’s update events. It is also true that a number of plugins and dedicated apps are available these days to help us manage our social activities in seamless manner; however, efficiency of these scattered purpose-specific plugins cannot be compared with the full-scale power of a browser. With the arrival of the RockMelt social browser, living on virtual society has become more pleasant and straightforward.

Significance of RockMelt

RockMelt is equipped with multi-tasking capability to manage all your social activities in order to stay on top of your social graph. The arrival of the re-imagined Social Browser will surely contribute to efforts for a greater inclusive approach to societal changes along with enhancing your web skills to adopt such changes.

Design and Development of RockMelt

Open source code of Chromium web browser of Google fame has contributed greatly in conceptualising, designing and developing the re-imagined Social Browser RockMelt. Effects of new Firefox 4 is also clearly visible at the menu design of the RockMelt. The next-age browser does many things other than simply allowing you to navigate your favorite web pages. RockMelt is the first of its kind in re-defining scope and dimension of future browsers. It integrates all existing and would-be social networking activities such as staying connected with latest news and information, sharing and keeping up with your friends, etc. along with supporting all advanced functions of a traditional browser.

RockMelt is currently available as a free download in beta form and to obtain a beta invitation, you need to be connected with your Facebook account. You may expect your beta invitation to arrive within 24 hrs of your connection.

Moving ahead with RockMelt

Upon downloading the RockMelt executable, you need to install it. Installation is quite fast and you will receive latest version of the app directly from their servers automatically. You will be required to provide your Facebook account login details in order to proceed with the installation. This is significant. Before giving full authorization to your installer, you must review the bits and pieces that RockMelt can pull from your account. RockMelt asks access to all that your Facebook API would allow.

Once authorized to access your FB, the installer disappears from desktop to work on its own at the background. No status message is displayed for quite some time. It’s a problem, especially to the inexperienced people. However, you need not to press panic button as long as your CPU shows signs of processing something. Once installation is complete, you will find RockMelt to appear with all your updated social events giving a tuned opportunity to experience your social web browsing with a rejuvenated enthusiasm.
