Are you feeling fed-up with slow Internet connection? Find out if there is anything to do to overcome that problem in this article.

Have you been complaining about how long it takes to connect and find stuffs on the Internet? Sometimes getting your computer to start also takes too long. Then the wait for web page to load makes you really tense. Several calls to your internet service company yield the same answer – there is nothing wrong with your connection. So is there anything else that you can do to overcome this problem?

To find out how to speed up the Internet, you need to understand a few things first. There are three basic components that work together when you surf the Web. You need to have a computer, a suitable web browser and an internet connection.

As the owner of your computer, you need to make sure that your computer is periodically ‘serviced’. By means of ‘serviced’ you need to make sure that all program are running without fault, your hard disk is not fragmented and there exists no malicious software on your computer. This will ensure that your computer can give the best performance.

Next, you need to install a suitable web browser so that you can browse the internet. Some browsers offer better performance compared to others. You can see from their documentation on the advantages and extra capabilities that they can offer. Try installing better and optimized web browser. If your web browser has not been updated for ages, this may contribute to the low internet speed since your browser has ‘aged’.

Then you can decide the service provider that can meet your requirement. Some companies offer cheaper Internet access rate compared to others, but you may sacrifice the speed of the connection. Some require connection through cable, some wireless and some use different technologies like DSL/ADSL. Some allow for further tweaking if you know how to do it. For example you can edit the computer registry in order to gain more speed. The simplest solution on how to speed up the Internet is by using specific software to boost Internet connection.

Have you ever wondered How Domain Name works, and what is domain name ? The name of Website such as Google.com or pchijack.com is called domain name. Now next question is when you put a domain name into your Web Browsers address bar how does it know where is this site located and it opens the correct site ?

So here is answer to your question -

When we type a site address or domain name (pchijack.com) in our web browsers address bar, The Web browser or our computer find IP address of the computer which is having this site. This is called Domain Name resolving. Now once the Web browser know the exact IP address of computer or web server having pages requested it connect to that computer and download the web page, images etc and show you in your web browser.

All Operating systems uses a DNS (Domain Name Server) to find out IP address of the server having web pages you requested. By default your ISP or Network administrator configures your computer to use their DNS Server. These DNS server may be slow and also takes some time to update. If the site requested by you is not available with DNS server specified it looks for address in Other DNS server and then fetches the web page you requested. This process can take a lot of time and you will feel a slow browsing speed.

You can increase performance of your internet browsing by using more efficient and fast DNS server of your choice. As Each site you want to visit must be resolved to it’s IP address, the Speed of browsing depends on performance of your DNS server. Sometime it takes even few second before your computer resolve the Address of Site you requested to see.

OpenDNS (opendns.com) provides free access to there DNS servers. Anyone on the internet can use their servers and they are very fast and reliable as well. In last 2 years of my experience with them I don’t remember a single instance when DNS server provided by OpenDNS went down. However it happened several times with my ISP’s DNS servers. Using OpenDNS Servers will increase your browsing speed by reducing time taken to resolve your site address or URL to IP address.

Now you must be wondering how to use OpenDNS service as you don’t know anything about DNS and changing DNS servers on your computer. So here we are to help you, Configuring your PC to use DNS servers specified by you Instead of one which is provided by ISP is very simple and easy task. Just follow the following steps and you will find it very easy:

Click on the Start Button > Select run from Start Menu or Hit Windows+ R key

Type ncpa.cpl in Run prompt and hit Enter key.

Right click on your network connection (local Area connection or Wireless Connection as the case may be) that you are using to connect to the Internet and select Properties.

On the Networking / General tab, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and hit Properties button.

On the properties screen, select “Use the following DNS server addresses” radio and then type in 208.67.222.222 in the first and 208.67.220.220 in the second boxes. (also shown below in screen shot)

Hit OK twice and you are finished.

See how easy it was. You can visit OpenDNS.com to know more about service they provide and why you should use their DNS server instead of Private DNS servers. You will also find lots of user reviews and experiences shared by other over there.
