However, it is not only restricted to the net as computer users normally store private information on their PC. No matter how you secure your computer system and even your personal information, hackers always had its way of breaking into your personal account.

Eraser - Securely Delete Files

But when you decide to remove these information from your system, what you think is gone forever is just lurking around the corner of your hard disk. This is what I found out when I run a secure deletion program like Eraser, into my PC system. I was totally impressed with how the program completely eliminates sensitive files stored in my system. I’ve noted and compiled some facts and features of the program that appeals to me. Read on.

Specifications

Eraser is made to support several computer platforms such as Windows XP, Windows 7 32-bit/64-bit, Windows Vista 32-bit/64-bit and Windows 2000. I was using the Eraser 6.0.8 version with a total file size of 8.70MB.

Features

The recent version of the program welcomes useful improvements. I quickly noticed the refreshed interface of the program that makes it much easier to use along with the inclusion of FAT directory cleaning capabilities which is better in wiping even USB flash drives. Deleting sensitive data is extremely easy by simply right-clicking the selected private folder or file and click the Eraser option then it instantly wiped these files immediately.

Completely deleting private file could be done either by overwriting these files several times before deleting them or run the Scheduler to delete automatically. Overwriting files several times to delete private data entails using different bit patterns that securely mess it up in which even a special data-recovery tool could not restore its contents.

Eraser - Setting Screen

On the other hand, deleting the files by running the scheduler requires setting up a schedule before automatically running secure deletions. I run the customizable Scheduler to completely remove the contents of the web browser cache of my PC system, Recycle Bin as well as idle hard drive space that destroys all files deleted earlier.

Pros and Cons

I love this program because it efficiently works in deleting sensitive files stored in my computer system in plain user-interface and spontaneous design all for free. However, when I first run the application, it takes over 24 hours to delete those private files but reasonably this depends on the deleting method used and the amount of deleted files.

If you want to permanently delete sensitive data stored in your computer system, then, Eraser is a must-have security deletion tool in maintaining your PC system.

Command prompt which is provided by Microsoft windows is always a popular tool among the advanced Windows user and administrators. It can increase your efficiency and speed of using the windows command. Like to open Windows word, you probably have to click on Start menu > Go To Programs > Go To MS Office > select Microsoft word shortcut. Alternatively If you have Command prompt already open you can simply type “Winword” Or press Windows +R and then type “Winword” in Run type box. I am sure once you try this method you will stop using the Start menu as it is much faster way of opening MS Word.

Windows Powershell Command

So how it happens, basically “winword.exe” is the core application file which is launched when you click o MS Word shortcut in your start menu. Same thing you can launch by typing the executable filename on command prompt. Run prompt does the same thing when we type an executable filename, it invokes command prompt and then execute the command and closes the Command prompt as well.

Now you know how and why Command prompt is faster than anything else in windows and that is why advanced users heavily use it. But if you are a Linux user, I am sure you never liked the command prompt of Windows compared to Linux Shell. Reason ? Linux shell is much more powerful then Windows Shell. It has so many command available and it can do so many task, that MS Windows shell seems like a child in front of it with its limited availability of functions.

If you liked the Linux shell so much then there is something Microsoft has developed in last few years which will make you like Microsoft windows as well. It is called Powershell. Powershell is a new command interface first announced by Microsoft in 2006, For XP and Vista user it is available to download and install separately for free, however it comes preinstalled with windows 7.

Microsoft has developed it as Task Automation framework, but when you work with it, you will feel that it is much like Unix Shell. Not only it works like that, it’s cmdlet(specially aliases) syntax are also very much similar. It is built on top of .Net framework and integrated with. To work with Powershell you need Microsoft .Net 2.0 Installed on your machine. However Windows 7 has .Net 3.5 Preinstalled.

Powershell can use and execute any of following 4 types of command –

1. Executable programs (binary files) like any other shell or command prompt.

2. Script files, written with native Powershell commands. These script have extension .ps1

3. ‘cmdlets’ Just like commands in older version of shell, these are .NET programs written as native commands.

4. Powershell based functions.

Cmdlets are specific programs which are designed to perform a specific task. Cmdlets have name like A verb and A Noun separated by a dash, so that you can easily recognize what it is designed for by its name (e.g. Get-Help). Each command let has a single function but you can combine them to perform complex jobs using pipes, just like old Unix Pipes. Powershell also recognize older shell command, they have simply created alias to their cmdlets to recognize old commands which does the same job. For your convenience we have given a list of cmdlets.

Did you know that files are not actually removed from your hard drive when you delete them in Windows (I don’t know about other operating systems, but I think they’re the same), even if you empty the Recycle Bin?

The files and folders you “delete” are actually still on the drive, except they’re hidden. This was implemented into the file system to allow for a much faster deletion speed (it takes quite a while to completely delete a file, about 5 minutes per GB on newer hard drives) and to give the user a possibility to get his data back in case of an accidental deletion or quick formatting (full formatting removes all data, but can take up to a few hours to complete).
So, if you have any sensitive data and think that you can delete it anytime if the circumstances require it, you are in for a big surprise. Using a data restoration utility like Norton Save & Restore or R-Studio, anyone can undelete your files and open them, exposing all your secrets.

Let’s say you really don’t want that to happen. How should you proceed?

One way to do it would be writing unimportant data like music and movies over the deleted, now hidden files. This would physically remove them to make space for the new ones. But you wouldn’t know where exactly were they written on the surface of the disk (they could be at the beginning, middle, end, or scattered all around if your drive was heavily fragmented), so you’ll have to fill all of the free space with unimportant files to be sure they’re really gone.

Another, simpler way to proceed would be getting a special utility that would completely delete any files you want. And you won’t have to pay a small fortune to get it either, because there are a lot of absolutely free programs around.

One of the best is DeleteOnClick, a small but powerful complete removal utility that follows the United States Department of Defense 5220.22-M secure file deletion standard, which guarantees that your files will never be recovered. The freeware version is more than enough for home and office users, while the commercial version provides even more security by deleting all headers (special sections on the hard drive that store information about everything that was written and deleted, like a log) from the disk and can wipe all your free space at once (to ensure you delete absolutely everything).

To download and install it, go to http://www.2brightsparks.com/onclick/download.html , scroll down a bit and click the Download button next to “DeleteOnClick Freeware version”, after which run the installer. You’ll need to restart your computer after installation, because the program adds a new right-click menu to Windows, called “Securely Delete”.

When you need to irretrievably delete a folder or some files, just select them and instead of clicking “Delete”, click “Securely Delete”. It will take quite a while, as the utility basically replaces the files with useless data, then deletes it, too. Think carefully before doing it, as you will never be able to restore those files again!
This is it, now you know how to securely dispose of important data to keep it from falling into wrong hands. I hope you will put this information to good use.

Adding more font types for your Office

Once you acquired more experience using Windows applications, you may soon crave for more variety of font types. Find out how to install more font types in DIY way.

We normally use Windows applications to finish our work. These might be some word processing applications, spreadsheet, text editor, design, publishing or web development applications to name a few. Even if you use different applications for different purposes, they usually involve text output or printouts in one way or another. These applications usually come with some pre-installed fonts, but after some time, you might find them quite boring and need some new typeset to work on with. Installing new typeset may be easy for those who have the computer background, but others may not have any idea on how to go about it. This article will show you how to install fonts in Windows XP easily.

The first step is to get the fonts that you want. You can find this from the Internet. Try to search on something like ‘fonts for Windows XP’ and you will see a whole lot of the search result. Choose the one that you like from the list. You need to download appropriate files that contain the fonts into the folder of your choice. If it is an archive (for example .zip or .rar), you need to extract it before it can be installed.

The second step is to go to Control Panel. Click Start menu -> Control Panel. Then in the Control Panel, click the Fonts icon menu. This will eventually display a window with the fonts that have been installed on your computer. To add a new font, go to ‘File’ menu -> then select ‘Install New Font’.

Then search the folder that contains the fonts that has just been downloaded and extracted. Once you select the folder, icons representing different fonts inside this folder will be displayed. You need to select the font (or all the fonts) that you want to install on this folder and click OK. These fonts will be copied into the font folder in your computer system.

The last step is to check and test your font word processing application. Once the new fonts are discovered by that application, you can use them on other applications across Windows from then on.
