Computers nowadays are usually equipped with compact disk (CD) drive.  CD can hold bigger storage compared to previous storage media like diskette and floppy disk.  Therefore it is seldom used to store software installer, antivirus system and backup data.  In order to make them work, you need to make them bootable.  So what is a bootable CD?

Bootable CD in question here is a CD that contains the operating system (either simple or complex) so that it can run by itself.  This means it can make the computer works without requiring the computer to read the hard drive during start up.  It is very useful to restore faulty hard drive and to clean a computer that has been infected by virus or malware.  That way, all programs in your hard drive will not run, including the virus.  This is to avoid further damage to the computer.  However, the contents on your hard drive can be accessed through a bootable CD.

Creating a bootable CD using a CD recording/CD burner program is very easy.  You simply have to copy the content to the CD using drag and drop style.  When you are done ‘copying’ the content, you need to record them on the CD.  Be sure to select the option as Bootable CD and record.  (When you first ‘copy’ the content, it is not immediately stored in the CD.  Instead it is temporarily stored in the memory and referred to as an ‘image’).  Once done, your bootable CD will be ejected from the CD drive and it is ready to use.  This is actually the simplest steps on how to make a bootable CD.

There are some CDs that are deployed as bootable like free antivirus CD that you can get for free from the computer magazines.  Others are like the operating system installer that you get with your newly bought computer including Windows and Linux.
